• Social Realism: aka “art for the people”. A movement that flourished between the two World Wars as a way of making art easily accessible to EVERYONE. Through their works, artists try to raise awareness about the living conditions of the working class.

• Realism: A movement that developed in the USA in the mid-19^th century and became visual in the early 20^th. Artists aimed at showing the realities of the society they lived in, especially ordinary people.

• Modern-urban realism: Urban realism started in the late 19^th/early 20^th century. It corresponds to any work of Art that depicts life in the Big city. By focusing on African Americans, Kadir Nelson added his modern touch to it.

Emmett Till was a young fourteen-year-old African-American boy from Chicago, where a lot of Black people felt more included in society at the time of Segregation. He was lynched then killed in August 1955 while visiting his cousins in Money Mississippi for having whistled at a white woman, which was forbidden in the South. This event started the so-called Civil Rights movement.

Andy Warhol is famous for being one a leading figure of Pop Art in the 1950s. As for Edward Hopper, he was an American realist painter known for painting lonely characters.

Jesse Owens was an African-American Athlete who participated in the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany. He overcame racism and won several gold medals there to Hitler's discontent.
